About
MPWN
Mulago
Positive Women's Network (MPWN) is
a network which was started in January
2004, focusing on the most vunerable
people in the local community in Kampala,
Uganda with a vision of bringing back
hope to the lives of women and children
who are infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.
Conscious
that many HIV positive women face
different challenges of different
dimensions, women in TASO Mulago realized
that they could do a lot to share
with and support each other in order
to cope with the impact of HIV/AIDS
in their lives.
This
is a page to their ingenuity, resilience
and determination to survive and to
thrive in the midst of many obstacles
by one who knows them. I hope that
you will find this page enlightening,
encouraging and emboldening.
The
interests of the women of the Mulago
Positive Women's Network (MPWN) are
the same as anyone else's - taking
proper care of their familes and providing
for the future of their children.
The
women of the MPWN are all HIV positive
and receive their ARV's (antiretroviral
medications) from international donors.
They also receive additional support
services though TASO (The AIDS Support
Organization - www.tasouganda.org)
at Mulago Hospital, the biggest hospital
in Uganda's capitol, Kampala.
These
women are now challenged by another
life concern: how to provide for themselves
and their families. Many of the members
of the MPWN either have been stigmatized
out of their former employment positions
or have never been employed before.
Some
of the women have been widowed by
HIV/AIDS and now must find a way to
provide for their children. The women
have started making and selling native
Ugandan craft items and selling them
to tourists and others (mainly supporters
of the international movement to make
AIDS and extreme poverty history)
for additional income.
